Daily 5

The Daily 5 and CAFE is a new reading program. It is simply a much more reading-centered way to do Reading. With the old Balanced Literacy program, there was reading, but it also integrated Math, Science, and other skills. Recently, schools and Hazelwood have begun to think that Reading is so important, that students should be doing more of it. So Daily 5 has five activities that students can choose from each day. All five activities are strictly literacy based. We have spent the beginning of this school year building stamina and practing these skills. Now students are finally engaged in all aspects of Daily Five: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Take a look at the pictures. You will notice 100% on task engagement.

Shadows

Students are studying shadows. They did an experiment where they looked at what kind of shadows different objects made. They used a clear cup, a book, a sheet of wax paper, and a sheet of clear wrap.

It was amazing to listen to the matter of fact opinions "It's clear, how would it make a shadow" "All objects make a shadow". Then I watched them learn and experiment.

First Two Days

Our first two days of school were amazing. They went by so fast! The days just flew. I am worn out but happy. Room 16 is such a great class. They get compliments every few minutes from other adults in the hall. They are so proud everytime someone tells them how great they look. Ask them about being peaceful and respectful in the hall and the cafeteria. They can tell you all about it.

I took some pictures of them working in Math, but I left my camera at school. So pictures coming soon.

By the way, I am going to begin a listserve of parents in the class to alert you to classroom information such as homework. Stay tuned. Homework has changed. There were some changes in the curriculum. They gave us more time to teach each skill which is wonderful. Unfortunately, we ordered our homework packets last year and they were based on one skill a week. So we are giving you more time to do homework at home. The first homework packet is due on August 23rd.

100% Engagement

In a classroom it is important to keep students engaged. Sometimes, this is difficult. But with cooperative learning, its easy and fun.

Today we worked on spelling words that end with es, ed, and ing. I gave students the assignment and they worked in small groups. Each child had a different colored marker and the assignment had to show all four colors to encourage participation. I looked around and lo and behold, all twenty students in the classroom were working and learning. I couldn't help it, I took a couple of pictures.

PALS

Each day, twice a day, students in Room 5 participate in an activity called PALS. PALS stands for peer assisted learning. Students divide up into two teams, players and coaches. Coaches coach thier player through basic math practice. Then two team switches roles. They continue switching between coaching and playing until times is up.Meanwhile, I assign points to groups who are working well and speaking politely. Students then complete an independent practice sheet. The parnter then awards a point for every correct problem.

I am so encouraged by the progress I see being made by students. They are getting extra practice and enjoying themselves in the process. I love moving around and hearing them encourage and congratulate one another. It's a beautiful sight to see! Check out the picture of students working together on PALS.

I so ready to learn how to do divison because when I learn how to do I will be happy because I have been trying my hardest to do divison.

Crazy SCIENCE

Yesterday we did a cool experiment. We had to find how much a soda can can hold,it says it holds 355ml....But there is air space.Ms.Coleman said"Did I get riped of by the soda company".Here is a question for ya.Why do you think the company left air space?TH-TH-TH-TH-THAT'S ALL FOLKS.By Joe H

In math were are starting a new unit.It is division and multiplication.Multiplication
